Grizzlies Outlast Hawks in High-Scoring Opener
The Memphis Grizzlies kicked off their season with a hard-fought 132-123 road win over the Atlanta Hawks at State Farm Arena.
Despite being outscored by 23 points in the second quarter (26-49), Memphis built a commanding 20-point halftime lead (61-81) and never relinquished it, though Atlanta made it a nail-biter. The Hawks, who trailed by 12 entering the final frame (98-110), mounted a significant comeback attempt, fueled by their bench which contributed 76 points. However, Memphis's own reserves answered with 80 points, keeping the Hawks at bay. The Grizzlies shot an efficient 51% from the field (43/84) and connected on 18 three-pointers (42%).
Atlanta saw strong performances from their bench, with Asa Newell posting a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds, and Corey Kispert adding 19 points. However, Memphis's balanced attack, which featured 32 assists to Atlanta's 25, proved too much. The Grizzlies ultimately sealed the nine-point victory.
Memphis begins the regular season at 1-0, ranking first in the Western Conference, while Atlanta starts 0-1, second in the Eastern Conference.
