Mali Stuns Spain in World Cup Upset

Sika Koné spearheaded a stunning 82-73 victory for Mali over Spain at the FIBA Women's World Cup.

Trailing by two at halftime (32-34), Mali ignited a decisive third-quarter surge, outscoring Spain 31-19 to build a commanding 63-53 lead entering the final frame.

The West African nation maintained their advantage through to the final buzzer, securing the win despite Spain's bench, which contributed 36 points through Megan Gustafson and Alicia Florez. Mali's efficiency, shooting 50% from the field and 41% from three-point range, proved too much for Spain's 18% three-point shooting. Koné delivered a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds, complemented by Djeneba N'Diaye's 19 points. Iyana Martin led Spain with 20 points, but it wasn't enough to counter Mali's momentum.

This victory serves as a significant statement from Mali in the tournament.
