Zagdoud's Masterclass Seals Belgium Win
Youssef Zagdoud delivered a monumental performance, scoring 37 points to steer Belgium to a hard-fought 85-82 victory over Slovenia at the Arena Antonio Alexe.
In a fiercely contested FIBA U16 EuroBasket encounter, both sides battled relentlessly, but it was Belgium who ultimately found the crucial edge.
Slovenia held a six-point lead at halftime (37-43), yet Belgium mounted a comeback in the third quarter, entering the final period with a slim one-point advantage (67-66). This Belgian surge, fuelled by tenacious defence that forced 16 steals, proved decisive. Despite a stark 0-for-20 shooting night from beyond the arc, Belgium compensated with 44% field goal accuracy and 19 successful free throws.
An unstoppable Zagdoud also contributed 6 rebounds and 6 assists, complemented by Lowie Van de Vyver's 12 points and 8 rebounds. For Slovenia, despite 39 points from their bench, including 18 from Anze Auer, and Roman Kolka recording a double-double with 10 rebounds and 11 assists, the collective effort fell short. Belgium secures a significant win to energise their tournament run.
