Gaines Masterclass Lifts Puerto Rico Over Slovenia
Dwight Gaines delivered a commanding performance, scoring 32 points to propel Puerto Rico to a decisive 92-78 victory over Slovenia at the FIBA U17 World Cup.
Puerto Rico held a slim 39-35 lead at halftime, then extended their advantage to 10 points entering the final quarter, ultimately outscoring Slovenia by 14 in the contest. The third quarter proved most pivotal, with Puerto Rico outscoring Slovenia by six points in that frame.
Despite a Herculean effort from Slovenia's Jakob Siftar, who finished with 31 points and 7 rebounds, and a double-double from Lun Jarc (20 points, 10 rebounds), the Slovenian side couldn't contain Puerto Rico's offensive onslaught. Puerto Rico's bench provided a significant spark, contributing 27 points to Slovenia's 12, and their suffocating defence forced 27 turnovers, registering 18 steals compared to Slovenia's 7. Gaines, who also added 6 steals, was instrumental, supported by 12 points from Eduyn Albino and 11 from Alexis Fuentes, both off the bench.
This victory, forged through relentless defence and timely scoring, sends a strong message from Puerto Rico in the tournament.
