Lapo Santini delivered a commanding performance to steer Italy to a resounding 93-64 victory over Japan at the FIBA U17 World Cup.
At the BDC National Teams Venue, Italy established an early lead, though Japan fought back to trail by just eight points at halftime (43-35).
The third quarter, however, saw Italy seize control with a decisive 23-10 run, extending their advantage to 21 points entering the final period. This momentum carried through to the end, with Italy ultimately winning by 29. The depth of Italy's squad proved crucial, as their bench poured in 58 points compared to Japan's 24. Italy also dominated the boards, outrebounding Japan 56-29, while shooting 47% from the field (34/72) despite converting just 46% of their free throws (16/35).
Santini, coming off the bench, spearheaded the attack with a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds, adding two blocks. Mattia Ruggeri also made a significant impact from the bench with 17 points and 8 rebounds, while Simone Ventura secured another double-double with 10 points and 12 boards. For Japan, Chusonjakku Shiratani fought valiantly, scoring 27 points, grabbing 9 rebounds, and recording 4 steals.
